UK-led global palliative care platform expands into Latin America

Apr 09, 2014

ehospice – a UK-led innovative website and app which links hospice and palliative care professionals around the world - continues its global expansion with the launch of a new edition in Latin America which officially goes live today.

Published in both Spanish and Portuguese, the new edition will connect people working in end of life care across the region - offering a central platform where they can access the latest developments in the sector, collaborate and share knowledge and good practice.

The new edition is led by the Asociación Argentina de Medicina y Cuidados Paliativos (AAMYCP), the Argentina Association of Medicine and Palliative Care. Until now, palliative care in Latin America has suffered from a lack of networking and collaboration, something ehospice aims to help resolve.

Dr Jorge Eisenchlas, a palliative care physician who is managing the new edition for AAMYCP, said:

"Palliative care in Latin America has developed heterogeneously, partly due to the unique cultural characteristics and different opportunities available in each country, but also because of a lack of communication in a region with large distances between capital cities and centres of practice. Up until today, there continues to be a lack of systematic connectivity allowing us to know what our neighbours are doing.

"ehospice will fill this gap, improving communication and bringing together personal initiatives into one common place with many voices. ehospice will allow us to share our views, developments and inspiration, and constitutes an unlimited tool for growing and expanding palliative care in the region."

David Praill, CEO of Help the Hospices, which has led the development of ehospice and runs the UK edition, added:

"The vision of ehospice is to improve patient care by ensuring everyone working in palliative care is part of a networked world.

"Launching an edition which covers the large region of Latin America in both Spanish and Portuguese is a huge leap forward in achieving this vision."

The Latin American edition will also help to increase awareness and understanding of palliative care among the general public by publishing patient stories, and will also carry feature articles and opinion pieces from leading palliative care practitioners.
