Enterprise and dedication recognised at hospice retail awards

A dedicated retail manager at St Giles Hospice in the West Midlands and an enterprising initiative to transform an empty pub into a thriving tea room and gift shop by Springhill Hospice in Rochdale have scooped national awards at the annual Hospice UK Retail Conference in Solihull.

Most Inventive Hospice Retail Initiative

The Craven – which had been empty for two years and had become a local eyesore – has now been converted into the Springhill Tea Rooms and Gift Shop at the Craven (retaining the pub’s name) and is doing a healthy trade in cuppas and cakes.

Although still in its infancy, takings are increasing weekly as word spreads and the tea room is busy every day, including on weekends. An outside seating area is being set up for the summer months and the hospice is recruiting more staff and volunteers to meet demand.

Hospice Retail Staff Member of the Year

Diane Sedgley of St Giles Hospice has managed numerous branches, served as Area Manager (supporting 31 shops across the region) and has most recently been appointed Furniture Manager where she has set up a new Property Clearance service to help swell the hospice’s coffers.

Hospice shops are a vital part of hospice fundraising with over 2,000 hospice shops throughout the UK generating total profits of over £60 million each year. Demand for end of life care is increasing but half of hospices have reported funding cuts or freezes*.

Commenting on the two winners, Antonia Bunnin, Director of Hospice Support and Development at Hospice UK said:

“The theme of this year’s Retail Conference is ‘Growing Stronger Together’ – sharing the experiences of our winners is one way we can help hospices to do this.

“Diane is a shining example of the dedication and versatility that hospice retail staff need to run great shops and get new ideas off the ground. She is a truly deserving winner of Hospice Retail Staff Member of the Year.

“The way that Springhill Hospice has brought The Craven back to life, back to the community – all while raising vital funds for hospice care – is a wonderfully impressive and creative initiative that deserves to be recognised.”

The Hospice UK Retail Conference took place on Thursday 23 April 2015 in Solihull. Each year the event gives hospice retailers an opportunity to develop knowledge and good practice, network with their peers, learn from colleagues’ experiences and hear from expert speakers in the industry.
