Hospice UK responds to Marie Curie survey on right to palliative care

Oct 23, 2015

A new survey from Marie Curie has found that an overwhelming 86% of adults in the UK agree that people should have the right to high quality palliative care, no matter where they live. The survey was released ahead of the second reading of the Palliative Care Bill in the House of Lords on 23 October 2015.

Commenting on Marie Curie’s survey, Jonathan Ellis, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Hospice UK said:

“It is not surprising to see such strong support for palliative care among adults in the UK. The right to proper care when someone is facing the end of their life is a perfectly human desire, and one that we join Marie Curie in calling on the government to include in the NHS Constitution.

“With 86% of those asked agreeing that people should have the right to high quality palliative care, no matter where they live, it is also encouraging to hear that so many people surveyed appear to appreciate what good care at the end of life care can mean to someone and their family.

“The UK continues to lead the field globally when it comes to the provision of high quality palliative care, as noted in The Economist Intelligence Unit’s ‘Quality of Death Index’ this month. However, there is still much to do to make sure that everyone gets access to the best quality care.

“The welcome proposals in the Access to Palliative Care Bill, such as commitments from Clinical Commissioning Groups to support and fund end of life care in their communities, twenty-four hour provision and improved training and education, would be an important step in beginning to reach more of the 110,000 people in the UK who do not receive the palliative care they need every year.”
