Hospice UK responds to NIHR themed review on end of life care

Dec 01, 2015

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Dissemination Centre has today released a new report that draws together research on end of life care from the NIHR.

The review brings together recent evidence, which might help those delivering, planning or using end of life services, in an accessible way. This new piece of work carefully highlights innovation, issues of concern and areas where evidence is lacking.

Responding to the report, Dr Ros Taylor MBE, National Director for Hospice Care at Hospice UK, said:

“This review not only reinforces what we know about the challenges ahead but also highlights specific areas of concern and areas where evidence is lacking. Importantly, this information has been carefully gathered and shared in a way that can only help everyone involved in end of life care to understand what is already being done and what we still have to do.

“Where there are gaps in the research, the review is a clear sign that hospices have a great deal to contribute by firmly becoming part of the end of life care research community. The review suggests that now is the time to test the solutions for the complex health and care systems that we now operate in. Given that the hospice sector tackles the challenges of person-centred end of life care on a daily basis, this is clearly something that hospices are ideally placed to help with.

“The types of services we need to develop, where they are delivered and when, are all crucial questions in end of life care. Hospices are already striving to improve access for people with different conditions, support those living with frailty, and radically reduce hospital admissions for those who could be better cared for elsewhere. By working together practically and academically, we can discover how to improve care and quality of life for those with long-term conditions before they reach a crisis point.”
