Hospice UK comments on the Government’s response to the Review of Choice in End of Life Care

Jul 05, 2016

Today the Government publishes its response to the Review of Choice in End of Life Care, which sets out plans for improving end of life care throughout this Parliament.

Tracey Bleakley, Chief Executive of national hospice care charity Hospice UK, said:

“The Government’s response to the Review of Choice in End of Life Care sets out a concerted commitment to improving care for all dying people and their families.

“There is much to be welcomed, especially the clear ambition to improve end of life care for everyone, through leadership, information, education and partnerships. Also, the call for end of life care to be mainstreamed in to the transformation programmes underway within the health and care system.

“However, we are disappointed that the call for additional investment in community-based end of life care recommended by the Choice Review was not realised.

“Improving care for dying people must be a key focus for all communities. Sadly, end of life care is not a priority for many Clinical Commissioning Groups and Health and Wellbeing Boards. Local ownership and accountability will be critical to achieving the vision of the Choice Review, so these local structures will need to radically step up to their responsibilities.

“As providers, funders and leaders of end of life care services, hospices have a vital role to play in driving change at local level and using their influence to help people achieve their wishes and preferences at the end of life. Hospices play a leading role in equipping the health and care workforce with the skills and knowledge they need to provide good care to dying people.

“By working closely with hospitals and care homes on innovative approaches to meeting people’s needs, hospices are ideally placed to ensure people get appropriate care and support, and to help deliver the transformation in care for dying people and their families that is urgently needed.”
