Hospice UK responds to new CSI research highlighting substantial future demand for palliative care

May 18, 2017

Today new research published by the Cicely Saunders Institute, King’s College London - published in the open access journal BMC Medicine - shows that the number of people requiring palliative care over the next 25 years is likely to increase substantially.

At least 42% more people will need palliative care in England and Wales by 2040, including pain management of chronic illnesses and end-of-life care at hospitals, hospices, and at home.

If all these people are to receive palliative care through the healthcare system, a significant increase in training and resources for both specialist and non-specialist care providers is needed immediately, according to the researchers.

Commenting in response, Dr Ros Taylor, MBE Clinical Director, at national hospice care charity Hospice UK, said:

“This projected massive increase in future demand for palliative care will have far-reaching implications for our healthcare system and society at large and is something that all care providers, including families, need to prepare for now as a matter of urgency.

“An increase in palliative care training for care providers and more support for families is essential to help meet these challenges. As part of its new five year strategy Hospice UK is leading more training partnerships between hospices and hospitals, care homes and other providers and also supporting hospices to enable more families to play an active role as co-deliverers of care.”
