Commenting on the announcement, Dr Ros Taylor MBE, Clinical Director at Hospice UK, said:
“Following the announcement that the Minimum Data Set for Specialist Palliative Care Services (MDS) will no longer be collected, we would like to reassure members that robust data on hospice care is still a key priority for Hospice UK and the wider strategy for hospice care.
“As the MDS is currently the only source of aggregate data about hospice care, Hospice UK is looking at accepting hospice MDS returns for 2016-17, and we encourage hospices to continue to collect and record their data as usual. In the first instance we would like all hospice services that are collecting 2016-17 MDS data to provide contact details for their MDS lead and we will follow up with them directly, and establish what reporting is possible for the 2016-17 data.”
“Data collection on the activities of all palliative care services is in need of major review. Over the next two years Hospice UK plans to develop and implement a Hospice Care Data Set that captures the full breadth of services offered by hospices, as well as meaningful data for hospices and key stakeholders.
“We look forward to working with all UK hospices to improve the data about hospice care and driving improvements together.”
