Ella McDermott

Ella is a student doctor currently training in Bristol and the South West.
Her interest in palliative care was first sparked during her work as temporary secretary to the Brighton RSCH Palliative Care Team, where she learnt about the importance of communication in healthcare through an inspiring team.

In 2017, Ella undertook an intercalated BSc in Global and Public Health. During this she worked with Dr Lucy Selman, a researcher at University of Bristol, to conduct a systematic review of research into the role of cultural factors in the acceptability of Advance Care Planning in progressive, incurable disease.

More recently, frustrated at a lack of student organisations or opportunities in palliative care compared to other medical specialities, Ella sought out like-minded students and together they set up Bristol Medical School's first Student Palliative Medicine Society.
