All are welcome to attend a free Big Book Club event at the Seamus Heaney Homeplace, Bellaghy as hosted by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust together with Compassionate Communities NW to mark Dying Matters Week during 2-6 May.

Local health partners will welcome international bestselling author, Emma Heatherington to discuss her new novel ‘One More Day’ set on the shores of Lough Neagh and West Cork, on the evening of Thursday 5 May from 7pm until 9pm.

Fiona Gilmour, Macmillan Service Improvement Lead for the Northern Trust, explained: “This year we’re using a creative way, with the help of Emma’s novel, to start the conversation about dying and grief, and to encourage people to plan for the end of life during Dying Matters Week.

“Emma’s novel is based on the dilemmas a young woman faces when her life changes expectantly after a devastating event casts a shadow over her family, and their future. This narrative aligns to the real life situations and challenges faced by many families that we help to support daily within our Palliative Care team.

“None of us want to think about getting ill or dying, yet none of us want to make things difficult for our loved ones either. Start the conversation today as it is essential to plan ahead for a time when those closest to us will be asked to carry out our wishes.

“Our experienced healthcare team will be available on the Big Book Club evening to host a Q&A session providing information on resources, support available and the steps to be prepared for end of life.”

This is an ideal evening for book loving friends or book clubs, but with an important health message to think about.
