Hospice UK responds to Review of Adult Social Care Complaints

The Local Government Ombudsman’s Review of Adult Social Care Complaints 2015/16 has reported a 25% rise in complaints about the care some people receive at home from local authorities and private providers.

Among the issues raised are concerns around the length of appointments and people not being treated with the dignity they deserve.

Commenting on the report, Jonathan Ellis, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Hospice UK, said:

“This report highlights some deeply concerning issues about the quality of home-based care and is a wake-up call to some social care providers to reassess elements of the care they provide.
“Caring for a dying person at home is a great responsibility and without the right level of support and training it can be difficult for all those involved. A provider can only improve the care it offers, and the individual’s experience, by being open to feedback, listening to and responding to complaints and keeping the needs of the individual at the centre of their work – but they do not have to do this on their own.
“Hospices are the highest rated providers in caring for people at the end of life with dignity and respect, and the majority of care they deliver is provided in people’s homes. Some of the concerns raised by this report could be addressed jointly, with many hospices operating programmes to share their skills wider and offer support to anyone working in end of life care. By making the most of each other’s capacity and expertise, collaborative care approaches between hospices and social care providers are an opportunity to enhance the care that each can provide in the final weeks of life at home.”
