Monday 6th - Friday 10th May

Dying Matters Mini Pods. From 6th - 9th May a new mini episode of the podcast 'Not If But When' will be published each day in honour of Dying Matters Week. On 10th May the podcast's full-length weekly episode will be dedicated to Dying Matters week and will focus on language around death, dying and funerals. The podcast is co-hosted by Kirstie Atherton, a funeral celebrant and community death educator and Lyndsey Conquest, who is also a funeral celebrant. All episodes will drop at 6am on Spotify and on the Not If But When website.   

HIoW Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust 'Dying Matters Awareness Week 2024'. The specialist palliative care team within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust are hosting 'Dying Matters Awareness Week 2024' webinars across the week for all staff. Monday 6th - Friday 12th May

12pm: Join 'SEOLCEG' to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week. An online quiz will be shared with Lilette Denton's Facebook followers on Why Language Matters in Palliative Care. A quiz will be posted daily as a challenge for followers and to get them thinking around the topic.

Tuesday 7th May

10am: Compassionate Conversations. A free awareness training session delivered by St Elizabeth Hospice. It is aimed at helping people (aged 18+) build the skills and confidence to enable open, honest and sensitive conversations around end of life, loss and bereavement, whilst identifying ways to help and support others. 12pm: Your Digital Memories Matter. Have you thought about what will happen to your digital footprint? What do we mean by digital assets? This workshop will provide you with an understanding of what your digital legacy means, what your digital assets are, where to go for help and how to turn this into conversation with family and friends. Wednesday 8th May

Advance Care Plan day and 'Getting Your House in Order' conference. On the 8th May the first national Advance Care Planning day will take place in the United Kingdom. This day of action and awareness will highlight the importance of Advance Care Planning and encourage society to document, share and discuss their wishes. Explore how you can get involved on the Advance Care Plan Day website. Registration for the ‘Getting your House in Order, Advance Care Planning Conference’ is now open. This hybrid conference will take place with a live audience in Norwich and will be streamed live. You can also listen to the first two Advance Care Plan Day, ‘Getting Your House in Order’ podcasts now. 9:30am: The Way We Talk (and Don't talk) about Death, Dying and Grief - Webinar. The Bereavement Counselling Team from Specialist Palliative Care at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is hosting a virtual training session to share guidance and advice on how best to have these difficult conversations. Drop by to hear more or to ask questions.

1pm: Why Language Matters in Palliative Care - Webinar. A free session for healthcare professionals to explore what language we use and why it matters when supporting palliative patients. Learn about the public perception of palliative care, what language is used in palliative care and why it is important. 5:30pm: Tender Conversations with Dr Kathryn Mannix. As we prepare for the end of someone's life, whether our own or of someone we love, there are many things we might want to discuss yet we can feel unsure how to start. Kathryn will talk about her experience of thirty years as a palliative care doctor and as a Cognitive Behavioural therapist, highlighting the messages most people want to communicate, and ways to manage those most tender of conversations. 10am - 3pm: Talk to us, Gateshead. An event hosted by the Gateshead Specialist Palliative Care Team, along with other local charities and care providers including the North East Ambulance Service. Staff will be available to talk to and ask questions. There will also be an opportunity to fill in a quick survey about the words used around death and dying. 10am: Dying Matters, Sunderland. STSFT will be hosting a stall at Sunderland Royal Hospital - Main Entrance Concourse to invite people to discuss 'the way we talk about dying matters'. The team will host a 'bucket list' to generate some discussions and invite people to leave a memory/message on their light up a life tree.

9:30am: Portraits with Purpose: Continuing Bonds Exhbition, Newcastle upon Tyne. St Oswald's Hospice is thrilled to announce the launch of our Portraits with Purpose: Continuing Bonds* exhibition in collaboration with Newcastle Artist, Leanne Pearce. This poignant collection of 12 portraits celebrates loved ones, provides a positive, creative focus for grieving and pre-bereaved families, and supports them in their ‘continuing bonds’ process. There will also be a special Meet the Artist event 11am-2pm on Saturday 11th May where you can meet Leanne at the exhibition and ask her more about the project. The café format is to create a safe space to discuss stories and wishes and to allow people to share their fears and thoughts over some tea and cake. Please note: This is not a counselling or bereavement session but a chance to raise awareness and allow people to make the most of their lives. Tuesday 14th May 

1.30pm: Dying Matters afternoon tea, Wheatfield Court. We are a nursing and residential care home and have partnered with the palliative care specialist nurse within Newcastle to attend the home and do an informal educational session with staff, residents and relatives. This will be interactive, chatting and we will have tea, coffee and cake. The open forum will allow people to ask questions and speak about death and dying in a safe space. Thursday 16th May

7:30pm: Much Ado About Dying film screening, Newcastle. Released to coincide with Dying Matters Week, this multi-award winning and critically acclaimed feature film will play in cinemas and arts spaces across the UK. The film follows director Simon Chambers after his uncle David calls him with a message of doom: “I think I may be dying.” What the viewer doesn’t yet know is that David is a total drama queen, a former actor and Shakespeare-lover who has grown old on a diet of attention and applause. Simon finds his life drastically interrupted and everything that could go wrong does go wrong as he tries to help his uncle have a good death. Address: Star & Shadow, Newcastle, NE2 1BB. NHS Greater Manchester’s Suicide Prevention Programme have arranged for this exhibition exploring the relationship between loss, creativity and healing to exhibit for Dying Matters Week. 2:30pm: Dead Good Conversation Café, Preston. Dead Good events aim to help people to feel ready, willing, and confident to talk about death and dying, and to be able to support each other in times of crisis and loss. This is a Conversation Café - a relaxed and supportive space where you can chat about anything and everything to do with death, and find out what you want from future events, whether it's advice on how to make a will, planning for health care, reminiscence sessions, or something else. 7pm: Lancashire Death Cafe, St Annes on Sea, Lancashire. A free event to talk about grief, death and loss. We all experience grief and loss as we travel through life. Some of our losses are living losses which we grieve, like the loss of a relationship, ending of a job, being made redundant, loss of youth, loss of health. Thursday 9th May

10:30am: Coffee Morning, Stockport. A coffee morning hosted by Mulligans Funeral Service to encourage conversations amongst families about their wishes for their funeral. The aim of this is to avoid the issues that come when families or individuals do not know the wishes of their loved ones. Experienced staff will also be on hand to answer any questions and provide information in a friendly and comfortable setting. 1pm: Love, Life & Death with St Mary's Hospice, Cumbria. An event with Pluto Productions, who will be performing the play 'Blue Skies' written by Brian Daniels. The play focuses on the importance of hospice care and open dialogue through the eyes of a young man confronted with the prospect of losing his mum. Following the performance St Mary's Hospice staff will be encouraging conversations around this subject in a relaxed and supportive space. 2pm: Creative Writing Workshop with author Freya Bromley, Manchester. Join writer Freya Bromley in a creative writing workshop for grief. In her book The Tidal Year she explores love, loss and the restorative power of nature after her brother’s death. Freya will show us how to use creative writing as a therapeutic tool to support wellbeing, encourage self-expression and untangle confusing thoughts. Together, we’ll try journalling prompts and free-writing exercises as well as exploring how writing about loved ones no longer with us can help us continue our relationship with them. This masterclass will be in person at The Trafford Centre, Manchester. It’s suitable for all levels and will be a supportive and safe environment. Friday 10th May

10am: Supporting people using substances at the end of life, Manchester. This event is being hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University and the purpose of using this space is to promote resources stemming from a project on end-of-life care for people using substances. 1:30pm: Beyond Words exhibit, Wigan. This exhibit offers a fresh perspective on discussing death and dying, moving away from conventional dialogue to embrace the universal language of art. While "The way we talk about Dying Matters" underscores the importance of language and conversation in healthcare settings and among families, this exhibit will recognise that not all conversations need to be verbal to be meaningful. Through the expressive medium of art, delve into the essence of what truly matters in life and death, bridging gaps and fostering connections between artists, viewers, and the broader community. By showcasing the heartfelt creations of nursing home residents and individuals from the homeless community, visitors are invited to engage with the profound themes of love, connection, purpose, and dignity in ways that transcend words alone. "Beyond Words" serves as a poignant reminder that meaningful dialogue about death and dying can take many forms, each contributing to a richer understanding and compassion. 2pm: Let's talk about death...West Lancs End of Life Doula & Ormskirk Libraries. A free event open to all asking: Why don't we talk about death? Why does it matter? 2pm: Cafe of Reminiscence, Coppull Library. A Café of Reminiscence is a way of bringing together friends, family or members of a community to reminisce and share anecdotes of loved ones who have died. Saturday 11th May

Communication skills as part of Omega Course, Leyland. The Omega course gives 18 hours of training about mortality, living life to the full, advance planning and skills to support bereaved and ill people better. A crucial part of this is confidence in talking about it all. To aid this, the course offers communication skills for social interaction with the opportunity of live practice in role play. People say that, though challenging, this is the best part of the course. Courses available in Leyland, Warwickshire and online. Sunday 12th May

2pm: Preserve a memory in paper with Jo-Anne Burgess, Manchester. Bring along a photo that evokes a memory of a lost loved one - it might be a holiday snap, a party in the back garden or a moment captured at home. Your workshop host, artist Jo Burgess, will show you how to meticulously piece bits of salvaged paper together to recreate this special keepsake. See the photo of Jo and her sister Emma as an example. About the artist: Jo Burgess is an illustrator specialising in collage. Originally from Ireland, Jo now meticulously recreates people’s homes, families and pets in salvaged paper from her home studio in Hampshire under the name Green Magpie. Tuesday 14th May

09:30am: St Rocco's Hospice Bereavement Café, Warrington. The St. Rocco’s Community Bereavement Cafés are open to all who are grieving and suffering after the loss of a loved one. Although bereavement touches everyone at some time, support and understanding can help during one of life’s more difficult and lonely periods. St. Rocco’s offers that support and understanding through their two cafes. However long you have been grieving, their café will offer you a warm welcome. The St. Rocco’s Counselling and Emotional Care Team with volunteers are there to listen. You can choose to talk one to one with a volunteer or talk to others with a similar bereavement in an informal and safe environment. 10am: Life Planning & Funeral Wishes, Ashton on Ribble. Our Co-op Life Planning and Legal Team will be discussing the importance of Wills, Probate and Lasting Power of Attorney. Please feel free to come by and talk to our experienced colleagues about your funeral wishes. It’s an opportunity to ask any questions about what to consider regarding the preparation of any legal matters. Death can be a difficult subject for many families, but we encourage you to address the “elephant in the room” as it could make things easier for your loved ones when the time comes. Tuesday 7th May

10am: Dove House Hospice Drop In, Cottingham. Dove House Hospice has been caring for people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire for almost 40 years. During Dying Matters Awareness Week, representatives from Dove House Hospice will be holding a drop-in session to provide information and answer any questions about their services. Patients and families are at the heart of everything Dove House Hospice do, whether caring for people at the end of their lives, providing therapies to help people with life limiting illnesses improve their quality of life, or giving much needed bereavement support to grieving families. 10am: Dying Matters - let's talk about it, Museum Gardens, York. Members of St Leonard's Hospice clinical and wellbeing and outreach teams will be available to give advice and resources on a range of topics including advanced care planning, funeral planning and how to deal with grief. Encouraging us to talk about death and dying It's Dying Matters Awareness Week next week and our teams will be encouraging people to have conversations about death and dying. Our End of Life and Pastoral and Spiritual Care teams will be out and about next week as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week to try and encourage people to talk. The theme for this year’s event, which runs from 6 to 12 May, is ‘The way we talk about Dying Matters’. It will focus on the language we use, and conversations we have, around death and dying – specifically between healthcare professionals and patients, their carers, and their families. The team is linking with Dove House Hospice, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, City Health Care Partnership and local bereavement services, who will be manning stands at Hull Royal Infirmary on Tuesday 7 May, Wednesday 8 May and Thursday 9 May between 11am and 3pm, in the main foyer of HRI. Staff will be available for a chat, advice, and support. Local groups, teams of health care professionals and members of the public are also invited to pop along to the Haven on Wednesday 8 May between 9.15am and 4.15pm, where the National Advance Care Plan Day Conference, which is being held in Norwich, is being live streamed. You can pop in and out during the event. We will be asking how will you ‘get your house in order?’. You might decide to ‘make a pledge’ to document your wishes within an Advance Care Plan. You might simply decide to learn more about this important area and have a conversation about your wises with a loved one.

Friday 3rd - Thursday 16th May

12pm: A Matter of Life and Death Festival, Birmingham and the West Midlands. A ground-breaking festival in Birmingham which brings together coffins and cakes, walks and wakes and authors with absent friends. Organised by community interest company BrumYODO, the festival takes place in venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands. This year’s festival hosts some regular events such as a tour of an undertakers, a Birmingham Catacombs walk, theatre pieces, an author event and numerous Death Cafes and In Memory events. And this year, new venues and contributors have joined the festival. There will also be an interfaith walk with talks from different faith groups about different rituals and practices in the aftermath of a death. The festival includes something for everyone and BrumYODO have done all they can to ensure as many as possible are free or low cost. Some need to be booked, some are simply drop-in. Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th May

The Dead Good Death Festival, Coventry. A 3-day festival investigating the often taboo subject of death. From a play about loss and remembering called Tell it to The Bees on the Friday night, to Yoga for Grief and the Dead Good Death Café on the Sunday, there will be events everyone can take part in. Saturday will be filled with stalls, talks and events, all starting at 11am. There will also be opportunities to attend various workshops and talks. 12:30pm: The Myton Hospices at The Dead Good Death Festival, Coventry. The Myton Hospices will be at The Dead Good Death Festival on Saturday 4th May. The Dead Good Death Festival will allow you to explore what a good death means to you through a variety of channels, such as talks, stalls and workshops, and Myton Hospices are excited to be hosting a talk! Come along at 12:30pm for a presentation by the hospice's Community Engagement Manager, Olivia Bowskill (Registered Nurse), discussing the wide range of services and how the hospice may be able to help you or your loved ones now, and in the future. Tuesday 7th May

Haiku and Three-Line Poetry Competition, Warwick. Warwick Hospital’s Palliative Care Team had a great response to their Palliative Care Haiku and Three Line Poetry Competition with an amazing 95 entries! The haikus received covered different themes around death, dying and grief, all of them uncovered an honest and open prose about this theme which is a taboo, yet affects us all! There is such a legacy to be had here with each poem being heartfelt, personal and a starting point to open up much needed dialogues about death, dying and grief. The team also received two poems from bereaved children, one who was receiving support from the local hospice. The poems were judged on 7th May at Warwick Hospital by writer, broadcaster and author of the ‘Poetry Pharmacy’ trio of anthologies, William Sieghart. William also visited the hospital's Chapel to talk about the ‘Poetry Pharmacy’ which can now be seen on the walls of the hospital and announce the winners of the competition. William Sieghart also signed books after the event. With the ‘pop up’ bookshop donating a percentage of their proceeds to the SWFT Charity. Dying Matters Week at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals. The End of Life care facilitators and Palliative care team will be holding a display board and table. These will be held at both sites of the hospital trust. They are also asking the wards to design their own End of Life trolleys for the chance to win a prize. 10am: Dudley Community Specialist Palliative Care Team: Dying Matters 2024. The team will be raising awareness and answering questions about the way in which we talk about death and dying. The team is comprised of very experienced nurses who care for people in their own homes and care homes as the approach the end of life and empower them to make important decisions about their future care. Wednesday 8th May

10am: BCU Dying Matters Event, Birmingham. Birmingham City University will be holding an event to promote Dying Matters Awareness Week. Staff from the College of Nursing & Midwifery, organised by Claire East, Erin McKenzie and Katy Sutherland-Hastings, will come together to discuss and promote Hospice UK’s Dying Matters week, with a focus this year on the language used around death and dying. There will also be external partners involved in the event, including Marie Curie and local NHS partners, who will share their expertise and have discussions with students and staff in attendance.  
The University staff involved all have clinical backgrounds in palliative care and end of life patient care, and the event will be a great opportunity for questions, gaining new information and accessing valuable resources. 11am - 5pm: Dying matters at Coughton Court, Alcester. Visit Coughton Court during Dying Matters Awareness Week, where visitors can use wooden roundels made from the estate to leave a personalised message for a lost loved one. Displayed along our memorial walkway, visitors can hang their roundel leading into the Little Orchard where they then can take a moment to remember them. On the 15th of May, everyone that has personalised a roundel will be able to come and collect it from the memorial walkway as a keepsake to remember their lost loved one at home. 11am: Dying Matters Week event, Nuneaton. Mary Ann Evans Hospice is hosting an event in collaboration with Dying Matters Week. The event aims to discuss the language used when talking about death, to reduce the stigma that there is around the topic of death and dying. The theme this year for Dying Matters Week is language, so the hospice has chosen to focus on the languages used when talking about death, such as best practice on the terminology around dying. 9am: Words of Farewell'- The language of a good death, loss and bereavement, West Bromwich. Sandwell General Hospital are planning to hold a staff engagement event for all healthcare professionals to attend as part of this years Dying Matters Week. It will primarily focus on the 'words of farewell' and how the language we use when discussing death and dying has an impact not only on patients, but also their relatives/carers. The team wants to explore how are they currently doing this and how can to improve not only communication skills but also discussing staff perceptions of what a 'good death' looks like. Filled with hope and solace, this beautiful 45-minute Choral Classics, featuring a selection from the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms, Faure, Durufle as several movements from Trotta's new Requiem. Requiem is a new album of choral music music of hope and peace, from which the streaming revenue from Dying Matters Week will be in-aid of Hospice UK. 10am: Poetry Speaks, Oxford. Living Well Sobell House runs creative peer support sessions for people living with a palliative illness. The groups are often attended by people who share their love of poetry, or their skills as a poet. Where we might struggle to verbalise the words to talk about the human experience of death and dying, a poem - or song lyric - captures it perfectly and deeply. Patients, staff and volunteers have shared their favourite poems that communicate about life and its ending and displayed them for all our hospice users to read. The Open Book, Norfolk. The Healing Harbour Charity based in North Norfolk wants to support people in their community to share their experiences of 'Dying Matters'. They will be offering an open journal in which people can contribute. The journal will be based at Sheringham Library during Dying Matters Week. The purpose of the journal is to encourage open communication and increase awareness of the lived experiences of people in North Norfolk, as they matter. The way we talk about Dying Matters, Colchester Hospital. ESNEFT will be promoting conversations all week (from 4th to 7th May) around how we talk about death, dying and loss between healthcare professionals, patients and their loved ones and carers. It is an opportunity for us to explore those terms we use everyday in our hospitals, that are commonly mis-understood by healthcare professionals and everyone. There will be a static stand at both Ipswich (outside the courtyard restaurant) and Colchester Hospital (in the main reception foyer) sites, with literature and essential ESNEFT teams who will be available to discuss the way we talk about specific words relating to their field - including chaplaincy (and the term spirituality), transfer of care (and the term 'fast track discharge'), palliative care (and the words 'palliative' and 'end of life'), our end of life Butterfly Volunteer Service (and the word support), our bereavement and mortuary teams and our charity team. There are several drop in sessions happening during the week for staff and the public at our Ipswich Hospital Butterfly Centre (Tuesday focussing on dementia, Wednesday with Suffolk family carers and Friday death cafe style staff drop in). We also have our end of life Time Garden open to the public on Tuesday in Colchester Hospital, supported by our Butterfly Service. Our palliative consultants are also doing a session at ESNEFT's 'Grand Round' lunch time teaching, for our staff (which will be available via teams).

Tuesday 7th May

10am - 12pm: Dying Matters event with Haringey Libraries, London. Come and meet North London Hospice at their pop-up morning stall at Wood Green Library. 12pm: Dying Matters Lunch, Heathfield. We are holding a Dying Matters free lunch at Union Church, Heathfield to talk about why the way we talk about death matters. I will be talking as owner of White Feather Funerals in Heathfield about the specific language that funeral directors change and why it needs to change as currently some of the traditional terms used in the profession dehumanize the person who has died. This will be followed by lunch and then a talk from a local bereavement counsellor about how we can talk to others about their grief. Tickets for the Afterlife is a web app created by Redbridge, Kirklees and Newcastle Libraries, in collaboration with Dr Stacey Pitsillides and Professor Claire Nally from Northumbria University. It also connects you to reading materials in your local library to help you further your inquiry. 2pm: Poppy's mortuary open day, London. This Dying Matters Week, Poppy's want to open up a conversation about great death care — what it is and why it matters. Knowing that the people close to us are treated with care and respect after they've died can make a huge difference to family and friends. It’s something that affects us all, yet often care for the dead is shrouded in secrecy and silence. 2pm - 4pm: Dying to Share, Hove. Dying to Share is about connection - we have grief and loss in common. Hannah hosts a safe place for everyone to share what is present for them and meet people who can relate. Writer, campaigner and former palliative care doctor Kathryn Mannix will be joined by two leading Canadian palliative care specialists - Dr Sammy Winemaker and Dr Hsien Seow - to discuss the need for broader conversations around death and dying as part of Dying Matters Week 2024. 10am: Dying Matters Awareness - Resources and a Chance to Chat, Wolvercote. Wendy is a former registered nurse and soul midwife. By raising awareness of Dying Matters she hopes to encourage more people to have their own conversations, at home and at work, around death and dying. All welcome! 4pm: Soul Films Presents, Studio 3NS, Brighton. For Dying Matters week join Wendy Pye, co-founder of Soul Films, at her studio 3NS as part of the Brighton Phoenix Art Space open studios weekend. She will host an intimate screening event (max 8 people) in her studio that will include a new short Soul Film created in memory of Death Cafe founder John Underwood (running time 10mins), along with two other short Soul Films (running time 20 mins). Wendy will introduce the concept of Soul Films and discuss how participating in a Soul Film can support the grieving process and encourage conversations about death and dying. There will be time for a discussion and questions at the end. Soul Films are sensitively produced short films that honour and celebrate individuals who have died or are nearing the end of life. A QR code linking to the film online can be printed onto a memorial plaque, which will then be placed in a significant public space, creating a lasting legacy and an alternative memorial site. 5pm: Death Café in Oxford. This Death Café meets monthly. A Death Café is a group directed discussion of death and dying over tea and cake with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than offering grief support, and is definitely not a counselling session. Far from being sombre or macabre occasions, Death Cafés offer an opportunity to explore and share our thoughts around the subject of living and dying in a safely contained, friendly and relaxed environment. The film follows director Simon Chambers after his uncle David calls him with a message of doom: “I think I may be dying.” What the viewer doesn’t yet know is that David is a total drama queen, a former actor and Shakespeare-lover who has grown old on a diet of attention and applause. 4pm: West Norwood Cemetery's first Death Café, London. At a Death Café people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. The movement was started by Jon Underwood in Hackney, London, UK in 2011 and since then nearly 18,000 have been held across the globe. The idea is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. We talk about and plan for other key life moments like birth or weddings but there is still much taboo in our society in talking about death and dying. 11am: Dying Matters theatre workshop for local residents, London. One of a friendly and creative series of workshops led by Chickenshed Theatre, North London Hospice and Haringey Council Supported Living. Photography Exhibition: Abi Humphries, Wiltshire. Heartfelt Photography Exhibition at Prospect Hospice. Join for a moving exhibition by local photographer Abi Humphries in the Heart of the Hospice Café. Abi's work is a personal exploration inspired by the time her mother and grandmother spent at Prospect Hospice as patients during her teenage years. Now a photography student at the University of Bath, Abi uses her art to channel these experiences. Helping someone to understand and accept their situation is often the hardest place to start - and the decisions that follow include considering the choices available and most importantly, finding the best possible outcome for each individual. Latham Lodge specialises in giving end of life care, supporting residents and their families through the journey with empathy, intuition and kindness, and providing outstanding clinical care. 8am: Let’s talk about the elephant in the room! Exeter. There will be a Dying Matters stand in the staff area of the TLC restaurant at Royal Devon Hospital. 10am: Companion Voices Bristol taster sing, Bristol. Singers from Companion Voices Bristol will share their gentle and soothing repertoire of songs which they sing for people nearing end of life. Members of the public can get to know their compassionate, spiritual but not religious, approach and hear about how different Companions got involved. You may also be able to join in with one of the songs and ask any questions you may have. Deb and Tone have known each other and worked together for many years. On their sofa, they meander with serious good humour, in and out of the topic of death and dying. They share some of their insights, snippets and stories - both personal and professional. It may make you think, laugh a little and be more open about that subject that we all shy away from. 6:30pm: Into the Quiet, Southampton. Join artist and vet, Sarah Filmer, to draw small dead wild creatures. This relaxed and informal event is for anyone who wants to find out more about death, dying and funeral planning during Dying Matters Awareness Week. The evening will cover all aspects but may be of special interest to you if you are helping someone you love to get their end-of-life affairs in order or sorting your own. There will be time for questions and answers and honest conversations about a topic so many choose to avoid, and the benefits of doing otherwise. You will leave feeling more informed and confident with regard to approaching end-of-life planning. 8pm: Much Ado About Dying film screening, Devon: Released to coincide with Dying Matters Week, this multi-award winning and critically acclaimed feature film will play in cinemas and arts spaces across the UK. The film follows director Simon Chambers after his uncle David calls him with a message of doom: “I think I may be dying.” What the viewer doesn’t yet know is that David is a total drama queen, a former actor and Shakespeare-lover who has grown old on a diet of attention and applause. Simon finds his life drastically interrupted and everything that could go wrong does go wrong, as he tries to help his uncle have a good death. Saturday 11th May

11am: Words Matter Dying Matters Week, Bath. Celebrating the Nurse Led specialist palliative and end of life care team during Dying Matters Week, the team will be in the Lansdown area of the Royal United Hospital Bath. Come and see the team, you matter to them. For this specialist team in life, just like the best stories, books and films, the ending is as important as the start. 11:30: A singing workshop by Companion Voices, Brighton. Companion Voices are singers who gather together to learn songs to sing at the bedsides of people who are dying. Songs are drawn from different traditions to create a soundscape to accompany people as they take their leave of life. ‘My experience of learning to be a Companion has been profoundly rewarding and satisfying’ - Kay. 2pm: Author talk by Corinna Edwards-Colledge, Brighton. Author Corinna Edwards-Colledge reads excerpts from about her novella ‘The Door that shouldn’t have been there’. Her novella is a modern fairy tale about grief, hope and recovery for everyone who has lost a loved one. The readings will be followed by a Q & A and a discussion about grief and creativity with visual artist Wendy Pye. Books will be available to purchase at the event. 3:30pm: Dead Good Film Screening, Brighton. A film showing of Dead Good, an intimate portrait of those dealing with their dead.  No booking required. Sunday 12th May

12pm: Human Writes - A Death Row Story, Southampton. Short film screening. This film tells the story of Maggie Alder, who writes to prisoners on Death Row. One of these prisoners was Karl, who she visited multiple times, including to attend his execution. The screening will be followed by an hour of general discussion, with Maggie, around her own experience of  befriending someone on Death Row. 2pm: Death Café Bristol. Death Café Bristol is a monthly event that welcomes all. A friendly group that likes to share ideas and experiences surrounding death and death issues. We like to listen as well as share stories. There is no set agenda, people decide on the day what we will share and discuss. It's always interesting,supportive and helps ease the isolation and fears about a natural part of life. 12pm: Come to My Funeral! Guildford, Surrey. Everyone is invited to my funeral! I am still upright and breathing (and trust I still will be on the day) but I want to show how gentle a ritual at Clandon Wood can be, set in our beautiful nature reserve. 10am: Dying Matters, Penarth. The event will have information stands, a series of topical talks, activities to stimulate conversation and somewhere to sit and chat with free refreshments. Dying Matters - Drop In Event, Carnmoney. A drop-in event dedicated to discussing the vital services provided by funeral directors. Whether you're curious about Pre-Planning arrangements, Memorial options, or simply wish to learn more about how Funeral Directors support families during difficult times, this is an opportunity to gain insights and ask questions in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. 10:30am: Hutchinson care homes, Antrim. Hutchinson Care Homes are holding a coffee and cake morning in their dementia specialist nursing home. It will be mostly carers of patients. 2pm: Bereavement card launch, Derry. The event is the launch of the ‘HeART of Palliative Care’ Bereavement Card which has been designed in collaboration with Year 10 students at St Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt. This card will be used by the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team which is working in the Mid-Ulster locality. 2pm: Launch of Cookstown Library's Death Positive Library, Cookstown. The event launches the first Northern Health and Social Care Trust's (NHSCT) Death Positive Library. The library provides books on lots of topics around palliative care, dying and bereavement for different age groups and needs, e.g., children and easy read formats. Much Ado About Dying film screenings + Director Q&As. Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief are partnering with Cinema For All and Cosmic Cat Films to support Scottish screenings of this new award-winning documentary during Demystifying Death Week. Much Ado About Dying follows long-retired actor David Newlyn Gale, living in an unsuitable flat, sustaining himself on cans of soup, keeping himself warm with a small army of electric heaters and battling a mouse infestation with toothpaste. The film presents an intimate, occasionally funny and ultimately moving portrait of a solitary life and a quietly critical assessment of the inadequate resources available in the UK for a rapidly ageing population.
