New research published today by the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department at University College London, highlights that people with dementia receive little specialist support at end of life, despite high levels of need and that healthcare services are not currently tailored to support their complex needs and symptoms.
Commenting in response, Carole Walford, Chief Clinical Officer, at Hospice UK said:
“It is concerning that many people with dementia can not access the specialist support they need at the end of life; especially when this support is shown to make a positive difference not only to their quality of life but also to their carers and family .
“A growing number of hospices are working in partnership across health and social care settings to develop support for people with dementia who are approaching the end of their life. A skilled full assessment is needed not to address the individual needs of the person with dementia but often also for their emotionally and physically tired carer.
“Hospice UK recognises that skilled compassionate interventions should be offered and is leading efforts to development communities of practice. Communities of practice bring together health and social care to share current thinking and identify what is good care in all settings. Through this approach we hope to maximise access to specialist resource and knowledge and so increase access to appropriate care for this growing population within our society.“
