Over the past two years, Hospice UK’s Compassionate Employers programme has worked with a number of hospices across the UK to explore what it means to build truly compassionate workplaces in emotionally demanding care settings.

Thanks to the generous support of our funders, we’ve supported leaders, managers, and frontline staff to strengthen wellbeing, open up conversations about professional grief, and embed compassion at every level of their organisations.

Now, we’re pleased to share that our offer is evolving.

Why this matters

Text

Hospice staff face unique pressures, balancing high emotional demands, stretched resources, and personal experiences of grief and caregiving. Our recent collaboration with eight hospices revealed critical insights into these challenges, from managing burnout and compassion fatigue to supporting staff through bereavement, caring responsibilities, and personal diagnoses.

We’re using these learnings to shape the next phase of our programme: a hospice-focused expansion designed to meet the real-world needs of employees across the sector.

What's happening

Text

We’re developing new tools, resources, and training to ensure compassion isn’t just an aspiration, but a daily reality for everyone working in hospice care.

This includes:

  • Hospice Workers Portal - A dedicated hub for hospice members, offering resources and support around burnout, professional grief, and compassionate leadership.
  • Recorded Training - A series of micro-sessions providing short, engaging training on compassionate leadership, coping with professional grief, and preventing burnout and compassion fatigue.
  • Tailored Resources
    • For Managers: Workbooks and guidance on leading with compassion, building psychological safety in teams, and supporting staff through significant life events.
    • For Frontline Staff: Reflective activities and self-care strategies to build emotional resilience and process professional grief.

Why join the pilot?

Text

We’re inviting employees from across the hospice sector to help shape this development by piloting our new resources and training. Your feedback will directly inform how we refine and scale the programme across the sector.

By participating, you’ll:

  • Access early versions of our new materials
  • Share insights that influence national support for hospice staff
  • Be part of a movement to embed compassion meaningfully and sustainably across the hospice sector.

Who are we looking for?

Text

We are beginning to understand the impact on frontline workers better, but we’re also seeing increasing challenges for others working across the hospice sector.

That’s why we’re keen to hear from a broad range of roles—frontline care teams, bereavement support, fundraising, communications, and more. We want to create a programme that truly reflects and supports the wellbeing of all staff across the sector.
