Resilience-Based Clinical Supervision learning programme

Our Resilience Based Clinical Supervision (RBCS) learning programme trains people working in hospices to deliver the RBCS model with their colleagues.
This means more people working and volunteering in hospices can access the supervision and support they need in their role.
What is RBCS?
RBCS is a model of supervision for anyone whose role is influenced by the emotional consequences of personal, relational, or organisational demands.
This video gives a short summary. It was produced by the Foundation of Nursing Studies (FoNS), the University of Nottingham and the Burdett Trust for Nursing.
About the RBCS learning programme
In partnership with the Foundation of Nursing Studies (FoNS), we offer hospices a model of supervision with a dual focus:
- the emotional wellbeing of all staff
- creating a sustainable, compassionate service for patients and families.
The aim of the programme is to develop RBCS champions and facilitators across the hospice sector over an 18-month period.
Cascading knowledge
Once initial facilitators have been trained, they can cascade the RBCS model within your organisation. This enables and empowers teams to offer peer-led sessions as and when appropriate. The model should complement any existing wellbeing strategies at your hospice.
Ongoing peer support
All newly trained facilitators are invited to join our RBCS Community of Practice. This provides opportunities for peer to peer learning and reflective discussion. Sessions take place every 4-6 weeks.
Programme overview
This training will be delivered virtually by Hospice UK and our hospice partners in the RBCS model.
-
The programme consists of 5 sessions over 13 hours:
- Session 1 - Exploring theoretical underpinnings of RBCS
- Session 2 - Using the RBCS processes
- Session 3 - Continued practice and planning for implementation
- Session 4 - Continued practice and planning for implementation
- Session 5 - Continued practice and planning for implementation
-
This virtual programme involves individual participation and reflection. To get the most out of it, you will need:
- A quiet, private space where you feel comfortable and safe to participate and share learning
- Access to a laptop/computer/iPad which can access Microsoft Teams and which has a camera and a microphone. This is a participatory programme so you will need to turn on your camera and microphone. It is preferable that mobile phones are not used. This is because the small screen can hinder the quality of the experience.
Requirements and criteria
-
To take part in this programme, your hospice will need to demonstrate that it has:
- An established education programme
- Familiarity with existing supervision approaches in your region
- Willingness to partner (“buddy”) with other local hospices to share learning, provide support and cascade the RBCS model
- Reaching all patient-facing staff with a focus on nurses and HCAs
- Consideration for people for whom English isn’t their first language.
-
As a participant in the programme, it is expected that you will:
- commit to attending the complete programme and to implementing RBCS within your service
- disseminate training through your hospice
- be supported by monthly ECHO network sessions to facilitate peer support, learning and development of best practice
- participate in a growing RBCS Community of Practice.

People who have previously completed RBCS Participatory Learning training via Hospice UK and the FoNS are invited to join a new workshop we are running in June 2025.
RBCS workshop: Building Capacity, Enabling Sustainability
This two-part workshop is designed to support people to train and develop your own facilitators.
Our goal is to provide the knowledge and resources needed to help you successfully grow capacity in your hospice to support implementation of the model, and enabling sustainability for the future.
The workshop will be delivered virtually on:
18 and 25 June 2025 from 09.30 to 13:00.
Please note: it is essential the participants attend both parts of the training
-
As this training is designed to support hospices to train their staff in RBCS, participants must have completed the RBCS Participatory Learning training, via the Foundation of Nursing studies (FoNS) or Hospice UK and be familiar with the model. More than one person can attend from each hospice.
In order to access resources participants must be members of the Resilience Based Clinical Supervision Community of Practice.
The programme is only open to members of Hospice UK.
-
This workshop will be delivered in two parts and will:
