Palliative Medicine Specialist

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

0.6 FTE (with room for negotiation), permanent, part-time rostered or fixed term.

We are seeking an outstanding and experienced Palliative Medicine specialist to join our progressive team of 5 experienced medical officers and existing 0.6 FTE vocational specialist. We have a shared roster for week day night and weekend on call care.

Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki is the main community palliative care provider to the Taranaki region. Our hospice comprises of a 5 - bed inpatient unit on site, combined with an impressive community care service. We serve a population of 123,000, with a monthly average of 220 patients based around our Maunga, Mount Taranaki.

We remain pivoted to community-delivered care as our primary focus, in particular improving access to optimal palliative care for patients in our rural areas. Care is delivered through home visits, rural outreach clinics and consult support to GPs/rural medicine specialists/nurse practitioners and the aged care sector. We operate using  both face-to-face and virtual means of communication and consultation.

We also provide out-of-hours phone consult palliative care advice and support to the Taranaki Base Hospital (regional 200 bed hospital), based only 300 metres away from our hospice.

Taranaki has unique geography and population. Work will take you from the metropolitan centre of New Plymouth to the very rural areas of South Taranaki and Mokau to the North.

Our hospice has a vibrant and friendly staff covering the key disciplines of Palliative Care.  Patients and whanau under hospice services, have access to a full range of psychosocial and spiritual support through illness and bereavement.

Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki has a strong education ethos, working hard to build learning and improve care both internally and with other community providers. As a medical specialist we would expect you to be involved in regular teaching of visiting medical students, paramedicine students from AUT, GPEP GP registrars and staff within the organisation amongst others. There would also be the opportunity to provide joint supervision of our full-time rotating PGY2 junior doctor community-based attachment undertaken at our hospice.

The successful applicant will be employed by Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki as a Senior Medical Officer with generous vacation and CME leave. Stipends are provided for conference leave and will be considered to assist relocation expenses. Commencement of the position is by mutual agreement, but it would be available from January 2023 onwards.

We are blessed with endless surfing beaches and an awe-inspiring Maunga/mountain backdrop. We are also only a 50 minute direct flight to Auckland and Wellington. Those who visit the Taranaki rarely want to leave.

Requirements for applicants

  • Vocationally registered in Palliative Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand

  • FAChPM or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ

  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team

  • Exemplary communication skills

  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care

  • Relevant experience and training
