It's been over 40 years since the foundation of the biggest and best half marathon in the UK, the AJ Bell Great North Run. Since then, it's become iconic as one of the largest races around the world. It's now the cornerstone of the annual sporting calendar for professional runners.
You'll find everyone from serious athletes to casual joggers taking part in the run. They're all hoping to cross the finish line ahead of Olympian Sir Mo Farah. Sir Mo Farah won six consecutive Great North Runs and set a record finish time of 59 minutes and six seconds.
The race was the idea of former Great British long distance runner, Brendan Foster. His inspiration came from competing in a half marathon in New Zealand: the Round the Bays race.
Having started off with 12,000 runners back in 1981, the AJ Bell Great North Run set a new world record in 2014. With over 41,000 runners, it became the world's biggest half marathon.
