Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK, said:
“Any change in the law on assisted dying would have profound implications for the hospice sector, which is already under significant financial pressure.
“Given the overall lack of clarity in the Bill on the nature of a future assisted dying service, we welcome the introduction of New Clause 20, which would require the Government to consult with palliative and end of life care providers if the Bill progresses.
“As experts in end of life care with close connections to their communities, it is essential that hospices are meaningfully involved in shaping any significant changes to how that care is delivered. It is vital too that they have the flexibility to determine the nature and extent of their involvement in a future service.
“Above all, regardless of how the Bill progresses, urgent reform of the hospice funding model is needed to ensure high-quality palliative care is available to everyone, everywhere.
“Amendment 21, requiring an assessment of palliative care, would be a step towards this so we encourage all MPs to vote for it next week.”
