Toby Porter, CEO of Hospice UK, which represents the UK's 200 hospices, responds to the Chancellor’s spending plans.

“We are pleased to see the Chancellor announce an increase in funding for the NHS in today’s Spending Review.

“We look forward to working with the Department of Health and Social Care in the coming weeks as they set out the detailed plans behind the three shifts the Health Secretary has identified.

“Demand for palliative care is on the rise and hospices play a critical role in ensuring everyone gets the care they need at the end of life. Hospices help people stay at home, avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, and die in the place that’s right for them.

“The upcoming ten year plan for the NHS must commit to long-term funding reform for hospices who have faced financial uncertainty for too long. We urgently need a sustainable funding model that ensures everyone can access high quality end of life care, whatever their circumstances.”
