Why we’re calling it the Hospice UK Garden of Compassion
Hospice UK’s Garden of Compassion, designed by multi award-winning designer Tom Hoblyn, highlights the vital role gardens play in end-of-life care. Thoughtfully designed spaces provide peace, reflection, and connection for patients, families, and hospice staff. By rooting the space in the landscape, the garden offers a sense of peace and permanence – qualities essential for emotional wellbeing in end-of-life care.
Tom has grown many of the plants in the garden himself from seeds collected on plant-hunting expeditions in the Mediterranean. Together, they will create a heightened sensory experience for hospice patients – help them to live in the moment, and ground with nature.
And the naturalistic design has been carefully curated by Tom, who worked closely with hospice occupational therapists, to ensure accessibility for all and easy access for both a wheelchair and a hospital bed.
Artisans have crafted the features in the garden from reclaimed and sustainable materials, such as the steam-bent oak ‘Together Benches’ made from a fallen oak – which enable patients to be truly together with their loved ones.
Why we need your help
Every year, hospices care for 310,000 people facing the end of their life and provide direct support to more than 90,000 family members and loved ones. And this number is increasing every year.
But hospices only get around a third of their funding from the government – and over the past two years hospices have faced an unprecedented funding crisis. That’s why we want to inspire everyone who sees or hears about Hospice UK’s Garden of Compassion to support hospice care in whatever way they can, so that we can continue fighting for everyone’s right to free hospice care.
And what better way to show your support for the UK’s hospices than by voting for the Hospice UK Garden of Compassion in the BBC/RHS People’s Choice Awards.
