An innovative education programme - developed and led by hospices - aimed at improving the quality of end of life care in hospitals has been shortlisted in the 2014 Nursing Times Awards.
Help the Hospices - on behalf of Help the Hospices, St Christopher's Hospice and NHS Improving Quality (NHS IQ) – entered the Quality End of Life Care for All programme (QELCA©) which has been nominated in the Enhancing Patient Dignity category of the awards.
QELCA© – a programme, originally designed by St Christopher’s Hospice in London which is primarily funded by NHS IQ, is delivered by hospices for nurses working in hospitals. It was established in direct response to concerns about inadequate skills in end of life care.
Heather Richardson, National Clinical Lead at Help the Hospices, said:

"This hugely innovative programme has helped change practice in hospitals to improve how end of life care is delivered.
"It has established strong partnerships between hospices and hospitals, developed reciprocal learning among staff and led to a greater emphasis on compassionate, person-centred care, in keeping with the recently launched Priorities for Care.
"The QELCA programme has made a very positive impact in a relatively short time and has much more to achieve in the future in settings beyond hospitals, including care homes and the community. It is wonderful to see the programme receive this recognition."
The winners of the Nursing Times Awards 2014 will be announced on Wednesday 29 October at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
