Job description

We are looking for a thoughtful and aspirational leader who has a background in clinical psychology/chaplain/social worker/psychotherapist/other professional with skills to deliver this exciting role. You will need to demonstrate a strong will and ability to set a new direction for the psychosocial and spiritual care offer at St Christopher’s Hospice based in South East London. We perceive this element of our care provision as vitally important in a forward-thinking leading organisation. The right person for this role will have a deep understanding of the policy and research about the relationships and tension in psycho-social- spiritual issues

In 2022, St Christopher’s commissioned an external review of spiritual care services. Concurrently work began to examine the psychological support being offered to patients and families through the existing offers of CBT, art and music psychotherapy to address how we support people experiencing total pain and emotional crises. As a result, we have created this new post to lead on this work and develop and embed a contemporary, whole person approach to the psychological and spiritual care we offer. This will include addressing the loss of attention in society to these things, as well as promoting contemporary thinking on what spiritual care means beyond religion, post covid needs related to profound loss, and new models of support emerging including greater collaboration with the work of the community action team.

This role (initially fixed term for 1 year) is designed to review St Christopher’s current total psychological and spiritual care offer to those St Christopher’s supports. The first priority will involve devising and implementing a comprehensive strategy for psychological and spiritual care. This strategy will clearly define the specialist offer and criteria for support ensuring the right services and therapies are offered and delivered to the right people at the right time. The post holder will also carry their own therapeutic caseload. An aspect of the role will include providing education and upskilling to clinical staff about best practice for psychological assessment. The role will also include work in St Christopher’s CARE supporting delivery of education.
