Our work on equality, diversity and inclusion
We recognise that as the national voice on hospice care, and as an employer, we have a responsibility to create a culture where everyone can participate fully and feels valued for the skills, experience and perspectives they bring.
We are committed to being an organisation where all colleagues and volunteers are treated with dignity and respect and where inclusion is expected, practised and actively promoted.
Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is not only about treating people with dignity and respect. It is also about recognising that people have different needs, experiences and barriers, and may need different support. We are committed to equity, taking proactive steps to remove barriers, make reasonable adjustments and create the conditions for all colleagues and volunteers to participate, contribute and thrive.
We will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, victimisation or exclusion on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of someone’s identity or lived experience.
We create a working environment where people feel safe, respected and able to thrive. We take this responsibility seriously and will continue to review, strengthen and learn from the action we take.
Our approach includes:
-
Our organisational values – to be inclusive, compassionate, collaborative, and innovative – guide how we work every day. These values were shaped by our colleagues, and are embedded in how we work together.
-
We use fair recruitment practices across all roles to help reduce unconscious bias. Examples include anonymised recruitment practices and structured, consistent assessments for all candidates, e.g. asking everyone the same questions, diverse interview/assessment panels wherever possible and providing questions in advance for some roles.
We are a Disability Confident employer and provide reasonable adjustments at every stage of the recruitment process and during employment. We continually review and improve our approach, seeking feedback from candidates and colleagues to ensure our practices remain inclusive, transparent and aligned with our organisational values.
-
All colleagues and trustees receive equality, diversity and inclusion training, supporting reflection on bias and encouraging shared responsibility for creating a healthy, supportive culture.
-
Our people policies are designed to support inclusion, flexibility and wellbeing including flexible working arrangements and a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing support.
-
We regularly review our policies and practices to ensure they reflect best practice, drawing on insight from partners such as Compassionate Employers and a membership with Inclusive Employers.
We will use colleague feedback, workforce data, recruitment insight and governance reporting to help us understand whether our actions are making a difference, identify gaps and agree further action where needed.
We know there is always more to learn and more to do. We remain committed to listening, reflecting and taking practical, measurable action to ensure Hospice UK is a place where everyone feels respected, supported and able to participate, contribute and thrive.
