A one-day conference looking at the hospice workforce, with a focus on delivering the best possible, high-quality care for patients and their families whilst recognising the wellbeing of all staff. 

The 2024 conference took place on Thursday 18 April 2024 at the King Power Stadium, Leicester

Aims

The aims of the conference are to:

  • Hear from experts on safety and quality
  • Explore and discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead
  • Create connections, innovative thinking and knowledge sharing
  • Ensure our workforce is supported to deliver safe high quality care
  • Provide practical tools and resources
  • Opportunity to view the exhibition and talk to our exhibitors.

Programme

Angus Ramsay, Senior Research Fellow, University College London, Applied Health Research and co-author of Elements of Improving Quality and Safety in Healthcare series: Governance and Leadership delivered the opening plenary.

Professor Catherine Evans, PhD RGN DNSPQ, Professor of Palliative Care, Deputy-Director King’s Clinical Academic Training Office (KCATO) Kings College London and Honorary Consultant Nurse Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, led our session on workforce.

Other speakers included:

  • Dr Jayne Chidgey-Clark, speaking in relation to the Freedom to Speak up and creating a culture for speaking up
  • Dr Zoebia Islam, discussing promoting equity through research in palliative care
  • Claire Henry MBE and Sheila McGovern, talking about staff wellbeing
  • Anita Hayes, asking ‘so what’ about the recent Hospice UK clinical workforce survey
  • Jo Dedes and Cate Oliver, discussing safe staffing initiatives
  • Professor Catherine Evans leading a facilitated discussion on workforce and quality

There were breakout sessions to discuss recruitment and patient safety, and a presentation from BD medical about safe hydration.
