Project overview

Compton Care has eleven appointed Trustees, each specialising in key areas of work. For some time they have also had a volunteer who is a member of the Finance and Income Generation committee and a Director of the subsidiary Trading & Lottery companies. Because of business and time commitments this volunteer is not a Trustee of the organisation and has not historically taken part in the same supervision and performance management processes as Trustees, although he has completed the required annual declarations.

This volunteer is a local Business Owner with excellent retail expertise, who adds significant value not only in meetings but also leveraging his Retail skills & knowledge working with the Compton Care Retail Leadership.

In recognition of the persons valuable contribution, and to make their role more official, Compton Care has developed a new Associate Trustee role.

Outcomes

The Associate Trustee’s appointment has been approved by the Board. Compton Care has provided the training necessary for the role and implemented the relevant background checks.

They have set clear objectives for the Associate Trustee, who takes part in the annual review and appraisal process alongside the Board of Trustees. The Associate Trustee can attend agreed sub-committee meetings and can be a Board Champion, but they are not required to attend Board meetings and have no voting rights.

Facilitators and advice

Key facilitators

Everyone on the Board has been very supportive of the new role. This has been very useful as it ensures that everyone is aware of the Associate Trustee and understands the benefits of having this position.

Tips and advice

Text

The Associate Trustee role can be used for when a potential Trustee candidate is too busy to meet the demands of being a Trustee. Alternatively for when the candidate is not quite ready to be a Trustee, the role could then be used as a development opportunity.

With the right support, Associate Trustees can eventually become a member of the Trustee board. This allows prospective trustees to gain a better understanding of hospice governance and to get more tailored experience.

Future development

Compton Care has developed a new role profile, job description and appointment process that can be used to recruit future Associate Trustees. This will enable them to benefit from a wider range of diverse candidates and skillsets.
