About this grant programme
An estimated 111 ,000 people die in poverty every year in the UK [1]. In our report about death, dying and financial hardship, we found that the significant financial and social needs of people facing financial hardship or living in socio-economic deprivation and their loved ones are not currently being met.
This grants programme will support hospices to make their services more accessible and more supportive for people facing financial hardship or living in socio-economic deprivation.
-
A total of £400,000 is available for this programme.
We expect to award grants to 10-14 hospices, with projects running over a period of 18 months. This allows for up to three months setup phase and one year project delivery – with a further three months to cover any unforeseen delays.
-
These grants can fund a brand new project, or build on existing programmes of work to better support people facing financial hardship or living in socio-economic deprivation.
Projects might include:
- Assessing your hospice’s ability to provide high quality, accessible care and support.
- Identifying barriers to accessing high-quality hospice services.
- Redesigning hospice services and/or introducing evidence-based tools to improve care and support.
- Building lasting and sustainable partnerships with other services to improve or expand support.
- Upskilling hospice staff and volunteers to provide more holistic and individualised care.
- Evidencing the impact of changes made to hospice services to ascertain whether they have improved accessibility and inclusion.
- Responding to and acting upon national policy or research evidence.
Read our guidance for more detail about what projects should include and what costs can be funded.

Hospice UK uses a Quality Improvement approach to support all the successful hospices through the life of their grant. We organise Project Lead Days where all the participating hospices can meet, develop ideas, solve problems and learn from each other.
Hospice UK staff will visit grants programmes to help evaluate progress, and can help facilitate discussions to solve any issues that might arise.
