Hospice UK is pleased to have been selected to feature on the BBC Radio 4 Appeal in August, sharing an important story of hospice care with BBC Radio 4’s listeners.
The appeal, presented by comedian Jo Brand, will run from the 3rd to the 9th of August. It features the story of Sam, Rob, their five children, and the support they received from their local hospice. The appeal encourages listeners to donate to Hospice UK, so we can continue to fight to ensure hospice care is available for everyone who needs it, now and forever.
Sam and Rob’s family had their world turned upside down when Rob received a motor neurone disease diagnosis aged just 33.
Their local hospice, Dorothy House, became their ‘lifeline’, offering expert care and space for the family to create lasting memories. As Rob’s condition worsened, the hospice ensured care and dignity until the end of his life.
Sam, Rob’s wife, says: “Hearing Jo share Rob’s story with all the BBC Radio 4 listeners was an absolute dream. Rob always wanted his story and his love for his family to live on as legacy. The support we received from our local hospice was wonderful, and supporting Hospice UK’s appeal feels like we are doing our bit to support hospices across the country, so they can be there for more families like ours.”
Jo Brand says “I couldn’t be prouder to support Hospice UK with their BBC Radio 4 Appeal. It was an honour to share Sam and Rob’s story, and reminded me of the stellar care my own brother, Bill, received at St Michael’s Hospice in Hastings. Hospice UK are working hard to support all our hospices, and any donation you make will help them continue this vital work.”
Jo Brand understands the importance of quality end of life care, and the difference it can make to patients and families.
She explains why she's pleased to support Hospice UK's BBC Radio 4 Appeal.

Hospice care eases the physical and emotional pain of death and dying, letting people focus on living, right until the end. But too many people miss out on this essential care. Hospice UK fights for hospice care for all who need it, for now and forever.
We represent the community of more than 200 hospices across the UK, who support around 400,000 people every year. They do everything they can for children and adults living with long-term illness, or approaching the end of their lives. So we do everything we can to support hospices’ incredible, invaluable work. Your donation to Hospice UK will help secure the future of hospices.
