Hospice UK responds to consultation on potential closure of Acorns Hospice site in Walsall

Jun 04, 2019

Today (June 4) children's hospice Acorns Hospice has announced a consultation in regard to the potential closure of one of its three sites located in Walsall.

Commenting in response, Tracey Bleakley from national hospice and palliative care charity Hospice UK, said:

“Hospices rely on fundraising to pay for the majority of care they provide, with the NHS only providing an average of 15% funding to children’s hospices.  Costs have been rising significantly due to increasing complexity of care, however hospices are operating in a very tough fundraising environment.

"Difficult conditions on the high street are also adversely affecting income from hospice shops. In our recent survey only 11% of hospices agreed that expected growth in resources is sufficient to provide the care they need to deliver, which is extremely worrying.

"Hospice UK is supporting hospices to adapt to the challenges they face so they can continue to provide the best possible care for people with life-limiting conditions and their families.”
