A number of hospices in England and Wales open their gardens for the prestigious National Garden Scheme - find out where they are, how you can visit them, and why it's a great opportunity to see what hospices do.

The National Garden Scheme is one of the largest funders of our work. They have donated over £7.8million in support of hospice care since 1996.

We visited St Cuthbert's Hospice in Durham for their National Garden Scheme open gardens in 2025 to find what makes the event so special - for visitors, patients, volunteers and staff alike.

From Wales, the South-West, South and London, to the North-East, North-West and Midlands - hospices across all corners of England and Wales are opening their garden gates to their local communities at National Garden Scheme open gardens.

We'd love you to visit one and find out why gardens play such an important role at hospices: here's a list of dates for your diary in 2026.

Royal Trinity Hospice in Clapham, London, is holding open gardens in 2026 for the National Garden Scheme

Royal Trinity Hospice, London

Opens Sunday 19th April, 14th June and 13th September 2026

Front gardens feature perennials, shrubs and trees, including wisteria on the front of the buildings. The rear landscaped gardens have lawns with herbaceous borders either side of a path that leads to the Koi pond. Plenty of year-round colour from bulbs, herbs, annuals, perennials, roses, shrubs and trees.

St Joseph’s Hospice: why we open our gardens for the National Garden Scheme

St Joseph's Hospice, London

Opens Saturday 30th May 2026

The formal gardens at St Joseph’s Hospice are a healing space. Made up of seven distinct garden spaces, each with secluded seating, intended to promote important end of life conversations with friends and family. When you visit at the end of May, you will find an abundance of roses in full bloom as the impressive wisteria fades away.

Skanda Vale Hospice, Carmarthenshire, opens for the National Garden Scheme's open gardens

Skanda Vale Hospice, Carmarthenshire

Opens Saturday 6th June 2026

Skanda Vale's tranquil gardens are built for therapy, relaxation and fun. Maintained by volunteers, lawns and glades link garden buildings with willow spiral, wildlife pond, borders, sculptures and stained glass. Blue and gold planting at entrance inspires calm and confidence, leading to brighter red, orange and white. Hospice facilities open for viewing.

Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, Penarth, opens their gardens for the National Garden Scheme

Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, Penarth

Opens Saturday 13th June 2026, pre-booking essential

A wonderful and accessible garden with stunning sea views. The large grounds at Ty Hafan welcome everyone, providing space for joy, reflection, therapy and fun for the families that use the hospice. Visitors will be delighted with the sensory garden, the woodland walk, trees and play areas. The planting is beautiful, including roses, peonies, shrubs and fruit trees. Wildlife is encouraged everywhere.

Marie Curie Hospice, Newcastle Upon Tyne, open their gardens for the National Garden Scheme

Marie Curie Hospice, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Opens Sunday 14th June 2026

Well maintained by volunteers, Marie Curie Newcastle's garden overlooks the Tyne and Gateshead and offers a beautiful, tranquil place for patients and visitors to sit and chat. Rooms open onto a patio garden with gazebo and fountain, with climbing roses, evergreens and herbaceous perennials. Come and see the work that National Garden Scheme funding helps make possible.

Marie Curie Hospice, Solihull, open their gardens for the National Garden Scheme

Marie Curie Hospice, Solihull

Opens Saturday 20th June 2026

Marie Curie Solihull's gardens contain two large, formally laid out patients’ gardens, indoor courtyards, a long border adjoining the car park and a wildlife area with fairy garden and pond area. Children’s games. The volunteer gardening team hope that the gardens provide a peaceful and comforting place for patients, their visitors and staff.

Leckhampton Court Hospice, Cheltenham, open their gardens for the National Garden Scheme

Leckhampton Court Hospice, Cheltenham

Opens Sunday 21st June 2026

Set in Grade II* listed medieval estate, informal gardens at Leckhampton Court Hospice surround the buildings. Courtyard garden and new feature gardens designed by Peter Dowle, RHS Chelsea gold medal winner. Highlights include a woodland walk around the lake, the new embankment garden (funded by the National Garden Scheme) and terrace with magnificent views across Cheltenham towards Malvern.

Willen Hospice, Milton Keynes, open their gardens for the National Garden Scheme

Willen Hospice, Milton Keynes

Opens Saturday 11th July 2026

The gardens at Willen Hospice span around two acres across two sites and include lawns, wooded areas, planted beds, a working allotment, orchard and an RHS award-winning pocket garden. Set on the banks of Willen Lake, they provide private and peaceful spaces for patients and their families, and are managed with a naturalistic approach to boost biodiversity.

Derian House Children's Hospice, Chorley

Opens Sunday 19th July 2026

Derian House cares for more than 400 seriously ill babies, children, young people and their families from across the North West. The gardens at the hospice offer tranquil outdoor spaces for children and their families to spend precious time together.

The Garden of Compassion in place at St Cuthbert's

St Cuthbert's Hospice, Durham

Opens Sunday 26th July 2026

Five acres of mature gardens are cared for by volunteers including a Victorian-style greenhouse and large vegetable, fruit and cut flower area. Lawns surround smaller scale specialist planting; and enjoy a woodland area with walks, sensory garden, and an ‘In Memory’ garden with stream. You can also visit Hospice UK's Garden of Compassion, relocated here following the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The gardens at Shooting Star for their National Garden Scheme open garden event

Shooting Star Children's Hospices, Guildford

Opens Sunday 2nd August 2026

The gardens at Christopher's, in Guildford, are enjoyed by families throughout the year and have been specifically designed with the needs of children in mind. Maintained by a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners, they feature adapted play equipment, sensory trails, and tranquil open areas for remembrance and reflection.
