The National Garden Scheme

The National Garden Scheme is the largest funder of Hospice UK's work, donating £500,000 in 2019, meaning that more than £5 million has been given in support of hospice care since 1996.

Every year, the National Garden Scheme (NGS) welcomes thousands of visitors to their open gardens across England and Wales.

The gardens, which each charge a small entry fee, pass the money to the National Garden Scheme who donate the annual income to a small group of beneficiaries, of which we are one. The National Garden Scheme has supported Hospice UK since 1996, donating over £5 million during that time. In 2019, the National Garden Scheme donated £500,000 to Hospice UK.

How they support hospice care

National Garden Scheme donations have funded vital projects such as the Commission into the Future of Hospice Care, the outcomes of which are helping hospices prepare to meet the needs, challenges and opportunities facing the sector over the next 10 to 15 years.

Through our grants programme the scheme also offers bursaries to hospice staff members, focused on courses and conferences that will have a direct benefit to patient care.

They also support our National Care Support Team – a team of experts that provide national advice, support and expertise to hospices, and sponsor the annual Hospice UK awards which recognise hospice innovation and outstanding contribution to volunteering.

Gardens and Health

The National Garden Scheme’s annual Gardens and Health campaign seeks to raise awareness of the physical and mental health benefits gardens and gardening can have.

This year the campaign will be focussing on the importance of social prescribing and the role of gardening and gardens in helping to create a positive path to health, they have a host of inspiring stories about people whose lives have been transformed by their gardens, plus garden recommendations tailored to soothe your soul.

Following the lifting of lockdown restrictions, many of the gardens in England and Wales are now open. To conform with government guidelines and ensure the safety of our volunteers and visitors, you will need to pre-book tickets on the National Garden Scheme website. Every Monday a new batch of gardens are added that are opening and make tickets available for you to pre-book – so do keep checking the website regularly.
