The need for strong and effective governance in hospices is vitally important, even more so now given the recent changes to the political and economic landscape in which they operate.
We work with our member organisations to help them improve their governance, ensuring they are fit for purpose and equipped to be leaders in providing high quality palliative and end of life care.
What is governance?
Governance is an umbrella term for the systems, processes and types of behaviour that enable trustees to hold the organisation in trust, steer its work and optimise the benefit to its current and future beneficiaries.
How we support hospices
We offer a range of resources and publications to support hospices with their governance, from practical toolkits to good practice guides and detailed reports. Many of these resources came from our Board Development Programme, which we ran in 2011/2012.
Leading the Board Development Programme, consultants from Cass Business School worked with over sixty of our member organisations and with our own board of trustees to develop their competence, knowledge and leadership abilities around governance.
The programme, funded by the Monument Trust, provided a unique opportunity to collate and share good governance practice – and to identify topics and themes where overall practice could be improved. As a result, we have published a report on learning from the Board Development Programme and commissioned a series of governance good practice guides.
New Hospice Board Development Programme
Hospice UK, in partnership with the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business School, City University, London (Cass CCE) is offering a new Board Development Programme for member hospices. This programme is part of our overall Governance Support Programme aimed at supporting the work of hospice boards and trustees. It will build on Cass CCE's previous work and significant experience delivering the Monument-funded hospice Board Development Programme which ran up to 2013.
The new Hospice Board Development Programme offers a choice of three options and prices – standard, enhanced, and refresher (for those who have gone through the previous programme and want a lighter touch review). There is also a tailored version for charities supporting NHS hospices. To find out more and discuss which options might be most appropriate for your needs contact us.
Workshops for hospice trustees – what you need to know
We are running a number of one day workshops for hospice trustees to develop their understanding and awareness of the trustees’ role and responsibilities in running an effective hospice. Workshops will be intensive yet informal, with many opportunities for participation and interaction. Resource material will be supplied to support attendees, as well as signposting to further sources of information and support for the trustee role.
These workshops are only open to our members. For more information about how to book your place, please visit our master classes and workshops page.
